Making The Martian

Based on the novel of the same name by Andy Weir, the film adaptation went through significant talent changes to bring it to the big screen. At first, Drew Goddard who had written the screenplay secured a deal with 20th Century Fox to also direct the film. When he later left the directing slot, it fell into the lap of Ridley Scott.

Ridley had directed one of the most critically acclaimed sci-fi movies of all time in Alien, but for this he was keen to honour the book and bring its comedy to the film adaptation.

The 70 day shoot spanned the globe and upon release the film became Ridley’s most successful box office hit. After years in the business, he struck gold with The Martian.

In this official documentary Ridley and his entire team reveal the production challenges and techniques that led to The Martian receiving 7 Oscar nominations.
